Hi, I'm Kei!

(rhymes with 'hi')

... or in full, Kei-Ella Loewe

I'm a South African illustrator currently living in the Netherlands. I started teaching myself digital art in 2021, during the Covid pandemic, and I’ve been creating in Procreate ever since

As a self-taught illustrator I have struggled with feelings of imposter syndrome and perfectionism that often made it difficult to feel 'good enough' as an artist. For the past 4 years I have been finding ways to overcome this by trying to prioritise fun, playfulness and allowing myself to draw like an (imperfect) human! With the rise of AI generated images, I find it important now, more so than ever, to 'draw with humanity'.

I am lucky enough to work as a full-time, freelance illustrator, working mainly as a cover artist for books. My work usually falls into two main styles: one is more realistic and often used for adult-focused projects, while the other is a looser, linework-based style that leans into storytelling and feels more playful—perfect for younger audiences.

No matter the style, my illustrations often share a common thread: they’re dreamy, colourful, feminine, and sometimes just a little bit unsettling.
